Introduction of Program: Amelia Kelso

Ashley Laughlin with Workforce Services spoke to the club. She first told the club about her journey with Workforce. Before coming to Workforce, she struggled to find a job because she didn’t know how to go about fining a job, didn’t know how to prepare job applications, and didn’t know how to be an employee. She came to Workforce Services first as an intern for a program on finding employment for youth. Several years later, Ashley is now a workforce specialist.

The Wagner-Peyser Act of 1933 established workforce centers across the country. The idea is to have a single location for employment needs for employees and employers. Ashley explained that the workforce center has many services under one roof.

The goal behind workforce centers is to have a qualified workforce and a thriving community. These services are available to anyone.

The center has three modes: self-service, facilitated help service, and staff assisted service. Self-service includes resources like Wyoming at Work online, as well as job seeker services such as: public computers and Wi-Fi, fax machines, and copiers.

The center also offers personalized job search advice, mock interviews, career counseling, needs assessments, and resume/cover letter assistance.

For employers, the center offers a statewide job ad service, can review job descriptions, will pre-screen applicants, assists with job referrals, and much more.

The center assists with rapid response efforts. Recently, Workforce Services assisted WyoTech with its first round of layoffs to assist those residents with transition assistance.

The center has the Adulting 101 program that is open to any community member. The program focuses on life skills. The READY program assists recent high school graduates and unemployed persons up to 24 years of age with a complete work readiness program. This program needs assistance from local employers who will take on youth employees.

Responding for the Club: Larry Struempf

Response: The Rotary Club of Laramie will make a donation to the public library children’s book fund in the speaker’s name.
NOTE: We Do Not Donate a Book!

Rotary 4-way Test:
Of the things we think, say, or do
  • Is it the Truth?
  • Is it Fair?
  • Will it build Good Will and Better Friendships?
  • Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?

Special Announcement from John & Joyce Vandel: John & Joyce Vandel encouraged all members of the club to become part of the Paul Harris Society. They will match everyone’s monetary donation up to 500 points.
